The Family Tree of the Liska and Haas Families

The Liska Family

redleafGreat Grandfather Tomas Liska, (one of many siblings) born in Hadacka, Bohemia and his first wife, Marie Vopat, born in Rybnice, Bohemia, migrated to the United States in 1863, with four known and identified children.  Great Grandfather Tomas and Great Grandmother Marie would live both in Wisconsin and Iowa.  It seems from, as yet, undocumented information that Great Grandmother Marie died and is buried in Webster County, Iowa.  Great Grandfather Tomas would marry at least once more.  There is an Iowa 1905 Census record for Tomas, and undocumented information that he died in 1906.

Great Aunt Mary Liska, born in Hadacka, Bohemia would marry Joseph Slama, also born in Hadacka, Bohemia.  They would first live in Wisconsin and then move to Iowa.  They had a very large family.  Many stayed in Iowa, but a number also went to Minnesota.  Great Uncle Michael Liska, born in Hadacka, Bohemia, would live in Iowa and marry Mary Wesley, who was also born in Bohemia.  Their children lived in Iowa, and some of their descendants continue to do so.  Grandfather Blosko liska, born in Hadacka, Bohemia, would live in Wisconsin and Iowa.  He eventually returned to Wisconsin where he married Katherine Holak, who was born in Wisconsin.  Grandfather Blosko and Grandmother Katherine would spend the rest of their lives in Richland and Vernon Counties of Wisconsin, living and working on their farms.  They would have eleven children, eight who survived past infancy, married and lived mostly in Iowa and Wisconsin.  One of their children, my father, Joseph Liska, married Mary Bieniek, and lived for a time in Chicago.  That is where I was born.  Great Uncle Wencel Liska was born in Hadacka, Bohemia.  He  would also live in Iowa and Wisconsin.  He eventually returned to Wisconsin where he married Antonia Kaukl, who was born in Bohemia. Great Uncle Wencel and Great Aunt Antoinia would spend the rest of their lives in Richland and Vernon Counties of Wisconsin, living and working on their farms.  They would have thirteen children, who married and lived in many states across our country.

The Haas Family

Great Great Grandfather Christian Haas and Great Great Grandmother Whilomena, "Philomena", "Minnie", were born in France, or Germany, as both nations are recorded on census documents.  It is possible they were born in a region such as Alsace-Lorraine, or the Saar, which changed ownership between France and Germany over the course of time.

So far, we have not found any immigration record for the two, nor any information if they were married in Europe, or married in the United States.  Great Grandfather Frederick was born in 1852 in Illinois, so we know they were here by then.  GGGF Christian, according to census records was both a farmer and a blacksmith.  He had a family farm in Dupage County, Illinois, but spent the last decades of his life as a blacksmith in Chicago.  Great Great Grandfather Christian died in 1898.  Great Great Grandmother Whilomena died in 1913.  They are both buried in Chicago area cemeteries.  They would have seven known children: Great Grandfather Frederick;  Great Aunts Emma, Carrie, Lottie and Amanda; Great Uncles Christian and Henry.  All lived and died in Illinois.  Most of their descendants also married and live in Illinois.  So far our research has not found a lot of information or records for the Great Aunts and Uncles.  We are very fortunate to have found more records on Great Grandfather Frederick, his wife Great Grandmother Katherine Corcoran, and their children.

While Great Grandfather Frederick began as a blacksmith, most of his life career was that of a butcher.  Before he died in 1914, he owned his own small meat market.  Great Grandfather Frederick and Great Grandmother Katherine would have six known children.  Two would eventually live in California, the other four remaining in the Chicago area.  Grandfather Edward Haas and father Edward Haas (married Barbara Kolar), had families and lived in Chicago.  That is where my wife was born.
